About Stanegate Stoves & The Cone
Our iconic Glassworks Cone in Lemington (NE15 8SX) was built in 1787 and is one of only four surviving such cones in the UK. A recent Act of Parliament at that time had just allowed glass to be made on Tyneside using plentiful local coal and the River Tyne frontage allowed the sand, alkali and clay to be easily brought in. The Duke of Northumberland provided land and the Northumberland Glass Company was established. It immediately started building the 130ft high Cone – new technology in 1780 which was designed to draw air from underground tunnels to raise the temperature of the glass to 2000°C. The 130ft tower was made from 1.8 million bricks, each course slightly offset from the other to make the characteristic Cone that has dominated the Tyne banks for so long.
Our 4,000 sq ft showroom within the Cone contains over 100 stoves, many of which are ‘live’ and working (nice and snug in the Winter!). Most well known, reputable stove manufacturers are represented and the product range (traditional and contemporary), much of which is not available elsewhere in the North East, will appeal to both city and country dwellers.
Why Stanegate Stoves?
We originally had strong links with Carlisle and chose the name Stanegate because it was the name of the old road linking the west side of Newcastle with Carlisle. The road existed before Hadrian’s Wall, and can still be seen in places along its cross country route.
